Overview

The giant African predator Lates niloticus is unsuitable for conventional home aquaria. Small trade specimens require facilities on a completely different scale as they mature. Food supply and waste processing remain major commitments even where enough water volume is available.

Distribution & habitat

Records span much of central and western Africa, including the Nile, Chad, Senegal, Volta, and Congo waters. Introductions for food production have extended its occurrence into additional regions, including Lake Victoria.

It occupies lakes, rivers, and canals, and can tolerate brackish conditions. A population in Egypt's saline Lake Mariout illustrates this tolerance without implying that salt is required for all stocks.

Aquarium setup

Adult accommodation means an enormous tank or pond. Decorative choices are secondary to swimming space and filtration sized for the biological load of a very large fish. A successful juvenile display does not demonstrate that these adult requirements can be met.

Diet & feeding

Fish dominate its natural diet. Young captive specimens have accepted shrimp and small fish foods, while large adults require substantial quantities of suitable whole fish. Both expense and practical provisioning increase with growth. Forceful feeding strikes warrant keeping hands clear of the feeding area.

Behaviour & compatibility

Companions beyond swallowing size are generally tolerated, but few remain suitable over the predator's entire life. Reports of juveniles sharing tanks with other large fishes should not be read as guarantees for adults. Tolerance toward large neighbors does not protect small potential prey.

Notes

Introductions have damaged native fish communities in some African waters. Lake Victoria is a particularly prominent example, where predation and food competition are thought to have contributed to severe losses among endemic fishes. Its food value and availability as a juvenile should be weighed against both ecological consequences and exceptional lifetime housing demands.
