English

Overview

Lamprologus stappersi is a Tanganyikan shell dweller that strongly defends its home. Once regarded as a form of Lamprologus ocellatus, it may still appear under the trade label “pearly ocellatus”. Confirm its identity rather than relying on that description.

Distribution & habitat

It is endemic to Lake Tanganyika and occurs along the Democratic Republic of Congo side between Moliro and Kalemie. Sandy shoreline areas with abundant empty snail shells form its habitat.

Aquarium setup

A tank around 45 × 30 × 30 cm is a reference for a pair, with larger quarters required for colonies. Provide open sand at least approximately 5 cm deep and substantially more shells than fish, allowing each individual several choices. Hard alkaline water and usable separation between shell territories are central requirements.

Diet & feeding

Live and frozen foods should predominate. Some individuals refuse dry preparations, so check actual feeding. Maintain variety when conditioning breeders rather than using pellet acceptance alone as a measure of condition.

Behaviour & compatibility

The shell and surrounding patch are defended vigorously. Suitable Tanganyikan rock dwellers or open-water fishes may work if they do not continually intrude into the shell zone. Colonies benefit from more females than males and plentiful, spaced shells.

Sexual dimorphism

Males grow larger and have a longer, less steep facial profile than females.

Breeding

Eggs are laid inside shells, with approximately pH 8.0–8.5 and 25–26.5 °C as breeding references. Loose pairs form within a female-biased colony and may change partners later. The female displays, enters to lay and backs out as the male releases sperm into the resulting water movement. He may enter directly if the shell permits.

Young appear near the entrance after about seven to ten days. Both parents care for them, excavating a nearby pit in which the brood is guarded. Free-swimming fry accept brine-shrimp nauplii or microworms but grow slowly. Separate rearing can improve survival. If juveniles overcrowd the aquarium, spawning females may eat their eggs.

Notes

Fry display a striped pattern. The old name Lamprologus meleagris still occurs in trade but should not be treated as a separate valid species. Nor should this fish continue to be regarded simply as an ordinary color variation of L. ocellatus.
