Overview
A peaceful suckermouth catfish from Venezuela's Orinoco basin, Lamontichthys llanero is adapted to shallow flowing water. Its gentle disposition does not eliminate specialized current and oxygen requirements, making a general community an uncertain default.
Distribution & habitat
It inhabits the Venezuelan Orinoco drainage, using rocky bottoms and tangled wood in shallow, moving water.
Aquarium setup
Sand or gravel, rounded stones, and wood create a stream-style arrangement. A planted aquarium is possible only with sufficient current and oxygenation, conditions that may make plant growth difficult.
Some water movement through the aquarium is essential. Matching the functional environment matters more than the decorative style alone.
Diet & feeding
An omnivore, it should receive fresh produce such as cucumber and blanched spinach alongside algae wafers or Spirulina tablets. Regular small live or frozen bloodworms and water fleas also belong in the ration; plant foods alone are insufficient variety.
Behaviour & compatibility
It is unaggressive, but companions must tolerate the same moving, oxygen-rich water. Suitable peaceful characins, current-adapted cichlids, and other similarly adapted plecos are possible choices.
Conspecific interactions are peaceful enough for group housing.
Sexual dimorphism
No dependable external sexing method is established.
Breeding
Captive reproduction has succeeded, although detailed methods are limited. Eggs are deposited on a flat surface, sometimes the aquarium glass.
Notes
It is uncommon in the aquarium trade. Limited experience should not be mistaken for a fully established breeding protocol.
