Overview
Exceptionally long chin barbels extending beyond the pectoral tips help identify Kryptopterus limpok. Despite a generally peaceful disposition, this schooling catfish needs substantial room. Its slender appearance should not lead to undersized accommodation.
Distribution & habitat
Its range spans mainland Southeast Asia and the Greater Sunda Islands, with Palembang as the type locality. Records include the Mekong, Chao Phraya, Mae Klong, and numerous island drainages. Flowing rivers and larger streams with suspended sediment are typical.
Aquarium setup
Long-term housing requires a suggested footprint around 240 by 60 cm. Exact decoration matters less than subdued light and cover that prevents skittishness. Biological maturity and stable chemistry are essential before introduction.
Diet & feeding
Small invertebrates and zooplankton are the likely natural foods. Offer varied sinking diets and suitable live or frozen invertebrates, with an occasional small earthworm.
Behaviour & compatibility
Four or more support its tendency to school. Choose calm similarly sized companions, avoiding much larger or boisterous fish that can dominate feeding. Very small fish may face predation risk.
Notes
Rare in ornamental trade, it is better recognized by its unusually long chin barbels than by broad glass-catfish labels.
