Overview
This undescribed Ucayali Hypostomus belongs to the Hypostomus cochliodon complex and feeds primarily on wood. A humped adult profile and spoon-shaped teeth accompany that specialization. Its diet should not be planned as though it were simply an algae eater.
Distribution & habitat
It comes from Peru's Ucayali River, living around and within submerged wood in flowing river and stream sections.
Aquarium setup
Provide spacious quarters, with approximately 120 × 30 cm of floor area as a reference. Sand and large pieces of wood create shaded crevices and refuges under subdued lighting.
Aquatic plants may be eaten, while floating vegetation can add shade. Maintain ample oxygen and water movement. Wood serves as both permanent feeding material and structural cover.
Diet & feeding
Wood is the principal food, and the fish cannot maintain good condition without access to it. Cucumber, zucchini, blanched spinach, and sinking preparations offer supplementary variety rather than replacing wood.
Behaviour & compatibility
Peaceful behavior permits suitable larger characins, cyprinids, gentle cichlids, and other catfishes. It is notably nonterritorial and can live with conspecifics or other peaceful plecos.
