Overview
With a standard length near 40 cm, Hypostomus regani requires substantial space and filtration. It is peaceful toward many companions, but similarly sized bottom-dwellers face a different situation because it defends territory against them.
Distribution & habitat
It is recorded from Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina.
Aquarium setup
A tank around 120 by 45 by 45 cm is only just adequate for one fish. Multiple specimens or other large catfishes need considerably more room. Sand, substantial wood, and smooth rocks create shade and retreats. Use subdued lighting and strong filtration for the waste load. Rooted plants may be dislodged; robust attached plants and floating growth have a better chance of surviving.
Diet & feeding
Feeding is straightforward because most aquarium foods are accepted. Provide vegetables regularly, including cucumber, zucchini, or prepared spinach, alongside a variety of dried, live, and frozen foods.
Behaviour & compatibility
Appropriately sized peaceful characins, cyprinids, or cichlids can be suitable companions. Conspecifics and similarly sized bottom-dwellers require much more space. Calm behavior toward open-water fishes does not mean that floor space can be shared without conflict.
