Overview
Traded as LDA10, Hypostomus mutucae is a small, peaceful pleco needing oxygen-rich moving water. Unlike many larger congeners it is not strongly territorial, but its current requirements and predominantly plant-based diet still deserve deliberate planning.
Distribution & habitat
It comes from Mato Grosso, Brazil, with the type specimen collected in the Mutuca River. Natural habitat consists of well-oxygenated flow over sand scattered with stones and rocks.
Aquarium setup
Arrange smooth pebbles and rocks of varied sizes over sand, adding woody branches. Circulation from one end helps provide movement and oxygenation.
Plants may struggle in this setup. Hardy Anubias or Java fern can be tried, while soft-leaved plants may be eaten.
Diet & feeding
Primarily herbivorous, it should receive most of its food as fresh produce and plant-based sinking preparations. Examples include cucumber, blanched spinach, tomato, algae wafers, and Spirulina tablets. Small live or frozen bloodworms or water fleas can be offered occasionally.
Behaviour & compatibility
Peaceful companions with matching conditions can include suitable characins, South American cichlids, and cory catfishes. Its nonterritorial nature allows conspecific groups and other gentle plecos.
Match companions for oxygen, water conditions, and available space rather than assuming that shared South American origin guarantees compatibility.
Sexual dimorphism
External appearance offers little practical help. The male genital papilla is pointed and the female's rounded, but examining this feature is difficult in such a small fish.
Breeding
No confirmed practical captive breeding account is available.
Notes
LDA09 is a common lookalike. This species has smaller spots on the head, whereas LDA09 has larger spots of relatively uniform size across the body. Relative spot size is more informative than the mere presence of dark markings.
