Overview
L050, Hypostomus cf. cochliodon, is an unresolved wood-eating pleco with a humped adult profile and spoon-shaped teeth. Wood is both shelter and a major food source, so its presence should meet ongoing feeding needs rather than serve only as decoration.
Distribution & habitat
The exact range is unknown. Comparison with related fishes suggests flowing river or stream habitats around submerged wood, but this remains an inference.
Aquarium setup
Provide spacious quarters, preferably with sand, and large pieces of wood forming refuges and accessible feeding surfaces. Subdued light is appropriate, with floating cover useful. Aquatic plants may be eaten, making a planted display uncertain.
Maintain ample dissolved oxygen and water movement. A gentle disposition does not reduce its space and oxygen requirements.
Diet & feeding
Wood is the principal food source, and the fish does poorly without access to it. Cucumber, zucchini, blanched spinach, and sinking preparations can supplement the ration. Keep edible wood continually available rather than treating vegetables as a replacement.
Behaviour & compatibility
An amicable fish, it can share adequate quarters with suitable larger characins, cyprinids, peaceful cichlids, or other catfishes when oxygen needs are met.
It is unusually nonterritorial and can live with conspecifics or other peaceful plecos. Smaller companions may nevertheless be intimidated by its size.

It belongs to the Hypostomus cochliodon complex. Historical use of Cochliodon does not resolve the uncertainty indicated by cf. in its identification. Its humped profile and spoon-shaped teeth resemble Panaque through convergent evolution rather than indicating membership of that genus.
At purchase, inspect abdominal fullness and avoid overlooking sunken eyes or other signs of emaciation. Pectoral odontodes can catch in netting during transfers.
