Hyphessobrycon brumado

Overview

From upland streams in eastern Brazil, Hyphessobrycon brumado carries a broad dark stripe onto the central tail rays. It resembles some familiar tetras but retains an adipose fin, a useful identification feature beyond general color.

Distribution & habitat

Known records are confined to the Brumado, part of the Atlantic-draining Contas system in Bahia. Collection sites lie around a thousand meters above sea level, with moderate flow, rock and sand beds, and grassy, shrubby, or wooded banks.

Diet & feeding

Wild stomach contents include filamentous algae and plant fragments alongside aquatic insect larvae, adult insects, ants, spiders, and other arthropod remains. This establishes both plant and animal components in the natural diet.

Sexual dimorphism

Some females have a narrower flank stripe and a more distinct rounded tail blotch, while some males carry more dark pigment on the tail. These are tendencies in some individuals rather than universal sexing rules.

Notes

There is no prominent shoulder spot, and the broad stripe merges with tail pigmentation. A separately defined tail blotch may be particularly inconspicuous in males. Assess the adipose fin, shoulder area, and full tail pattern together.
