Hyphessobrycon balbus 是巴西中部高地源头水系的小型灯鱼，已知记录集中于巴拉那河上游。它的侧线不完整，这也与学名种加词的命名含义有关。

采集点还记录有多类灯鱼、鲶鱼及胎生鱼，但同域出现并不能直接证明在水族箱中安全混养。种名所指的“断续”是侧线形态，不是行为或健康异常。

Overview
A small tetra of central Brazilian headwaters, Hyphessobrycon balbus is recorded from the upper Paraná system. Its incomplete lateral line is reflected in the meaning of its species name.
Distribution & habitat
Records come from the Federal District and neighboring Goiás. Most involve the São Bartolomeu and its Bananal, Santa Maria–Torto, and Gama tributary systems, with the type locality near Planaltina.
Notes
Collection sites contain several other characins, catfish, and livebearers, but shared occurrence does not establish aquarium compatibility. The name’s reference to an interrupted or “stuttering” feature concerns the lateral line, not behavior or illness.
