Overview
Hydrocynus vittatus is a powerful, fast African piscivore that hunts in large shoals in nature. Juveniles appear in trade, but adult accommodation and maintenance hazards make it unsuitable for an ordinary aquarium.
Distribution & habitat
Its broad African range extends from Egypt to South Africa. Large rivers and lakes, including Tanganyika, are typical settings.
Aquarium setup
Even a tank around 300 × 90 × 90 cm, or 2,430 L, is inadequate for an adult. That figure indicates scale rather than guaranteeing lifetime accommodation. Keep the layout sparse, perhaps using sand, and prioritize immense swimming space, excellent water quality, and ample oxygen.
Diet & feeding
Fish are its natural prey. It can nevertheless be trained to take small dead fish and other nonliving foods, so an exclusive live-fish diet is not inevitable.
Behaviour & compatibility
House it alone or consider similarly sized conspecifics only where space is truly adequate. Temporary juvenile associations with larger fishes do not demonstrate lasting compatibility. Smaller companions may suffer sudden severe attacks, and adult teeth and strength increase management demands.
Breeding
Captive reproduction has been reported, but usable details are extremely limited. Any serious attempt requires exceptional facilities rather than a standard breeding aquarium.
Notes
Reliable external sexing remains unknown. The streamlined muscular body and interlocking teeth, visible even with the mouth closed, are adaptations to predation. Adult requirements should determine acquisition decisions, not the manageable appearance of a juvenile.
