Overview
Hydrocynus goliath is an enormous, powerful piscivorous characin with rapid swimming and interlocking pointed teeth visible even when the mouth is closed. Juvenile availability disguises exceptional adult housing and handling demands. It is unsuitable for ordinary home aquariums.
Distribution & habitat
Records concern Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Large rivers and lakes, including Tanganyika, form its typical habitat.
Aquarium setup
Facilities must be immense. Even a rough figure of 15,000 L should be understood as an indication of scale, not a universally adequate minimum. Speed and strength favor a sparse layout, perhaps with sand, emphasizing excellent water quality, oxygenation, and uninterrupted swimming space.
Diet & feeding
Fish are its natural prey, but live food is not obligatory. Individuals can learn to accept small dead fish and other nonliving animal foods rather than remaining permanently dependent on live prey.
Behaviour & compatibility
Adults should be housed alone. Juveniles may school, and temporary success with larger companions has been reported, but neither establishes adult compatibility. Smaller fishes can suffer sudden severe attacks, with risk increasing as the predator grows.
Notes
Reliable external sexing and aquarium breeding records are unavailable. Teeth, strength, and rapid movement make maintenance around adults hazardous. Resolve lifetime accommodation before acquisition rather than treating repeated rehoming as a substitute for adequate facilities.
