Overview
Horabagrus nigricollaris carries a dark shoulder marking that crosses the back to form a collar. Although smaller than its similar relative, it is still a substantial catfish rather than a miniature species for a small community aquarium.
Distribution & habitat
It is native to the Chalakudy River in Kerala, southwestern India. Streamlike headwaters are apparently its principal habitat.
Aquarium setup
Provide a footprint of at least about 120 × 45 cm. As a nocturnal fish, it benefits from subdued light and refuges made from large wood, branches, rocks, or suitable pipes. Decorations must be secured or heavy enough to resist being shifted.
Use filtration capable of processing its waste. Its hill-stream origin suggests that good circulation and high oxygen availability are appropriate; hiding places do not replace attention to water movement.
Diet & feeding
Most specimens accept varied dry and frozen animal foods readily. Alternate pellets with shrimp flesh, mussels, and earthworms. Very secretive individuals may need food after the lights go out to ensure they receive a share.
Behaviour & compatibility
It is generally placid with similarly sized peaceful fishes, but will swallow companions that fit into its mouth. Larger cyprinids, characins, and catfishes are possible candidates only when their size is suitable.
Members of its own species ordinarily do not quarrel. Single specimens or small groups can be maintained according to available space.
Notes
In Horabagrus brachysoma, the shoulder mark is roughly circular and the eventual fish is larger. Here it connects across the back. Since both are commonly sold young, distinguishing a round blotch from a collar is more useful than relying on a broad trade label.
