Overview

Hoplisoma ehrhardti is an infrequently traded catfish from eastern Brazil with a peaceful, social disposition. Several relatives look similar. Its aquarium needs center on conspecific company, clean substrate, and regular feeding rather than service as a cleanup fish.

Distribution & habitat

Records extend from southern São Paulo to northern Santa Catarina, including the Iguazu, Ribeira de Iguape, and upper Paranapanema systems. It inhabits small rivers and streams with soft bottoms, including some sites altered by human activity.

Aquarium setup

Use fine sand or carefully maintained rounded gravel. Cover gives the group security, while accessible open areas allow it to forage. Decoration does not remove the need to keep the substrate clean.

Diet & feeding

Provide varied sinking dry foods with small live or frozen items, including bloodworms and Tubifex. This omnivorous feeder needs direct meals. Check feeding success rather than relying on food left by other aquarium residents.

Behaviour & compatibility

Maintain at least four to six conspecifics. Peaceful group foraging does not replace routine cleaning or intentional feeding.

Sexual dimorphism

Females usually become larger and distinctly broader and rounder at maturity, especially when carrying eggs.

Notes

Several similarly patterned catfishes can be confused with this species. Collection information and the complete appearance are more useful than a familiar sales name or one shared marking.

Rows of body plates provide protection. Occasional air gulps support auxiliary breathing, while stiff pectoral spines can catch in nets or puncture skin. Suggested mild toxicity of secretions near the spine bases remains uncertain, reinforcing the need for gentle transfers.
