Overview

The small catfish Hoplisoma cochui is also associated with the code C022. Four or five dark markings along each flank provide a useful comparison with similarly patterned miniature cory-type fishes.

Distribution & habitat

It is native to the upper Araguaia in central Brazil, with its type locality in Goiás. The broad ranges of other miniature catfishes should not be assumed for this species.

Aquarium setup

Use fine sand where possible. Smooth gravel is acceptable if maintained carefully. Provide cover for security while allowing food to reach the group's feeding areas.

Diet & feeding

Offer a varied omnivorous diet of sinking dry foods and small live or frozen items, including bloodworms and Tubifex. Match particle size to the fish and check that it actually obtains food. Leftovers from other inhabitants are not an adequate feeding strategy, and these catfish do not clean the aquarium by themselves.

Behaviour & compatibility

Keep at least four to six conspecifics. Their peaceful social behavior calls for company and dependable feeding opportunities, even in a small species.

Notes

The usual count of four or five flank markings helps separate it from a lookalike with two or three. Reference codes support communication but should be considered alongside the complete pattern and collection information.

Bony plates protect the body, and occasional surface gulps allow auxiliary air breathing. Stiff pectoral spines can still snag nets or puncture skin despite the fish's size. Handle transfers gently; possible mild toxicity of secretions near the spine bases remains uncertain.
