Overview

Two broad dorsal saddles characterize Homaloptera parclitella, a stream loach from Peninsular Malaysia and southern Thailand. It was formerly treated as a form of Homaloptera orthogoniata, so older books and commercial identifications can still be misleading.

Although not aggressive, it depends on clear, oxygen-rich current. Established grazing surfaces, continuous aeration, and an appropriate group matter far more than assigning it a general cleanup role.

Distribution & habitat

Malaysian records span the Terengganu, Perak, Tahan, Muar, Jelai, Endau, Mersing, and Sedili basins. In southern Thailand it occurs in the Sai Buri, Bang Nara, and Kolok systems. The type locality is a series of rock pools above the Sekayu waterfalls in the Terengganu drainage.

It inhabits swift streams and headwaters with clear, highly oxygenated water over gravel, stones, boulders, or bedrock supporting biofilm. Fish at the type site occupied shallow water among rocks.

In the Kahang River of the Endau basin, it was found only in the fastest sections among Cryptocoryne affinis. The co-occurring Homaloptera ogilviei used slower areas of the plant beds, illustrating how fishes in one stream can select different current conditions.

Aquarium setup

Provide an aquarium at least 120 cm long for sustained care. Use generous filtration with supplementary pumps and aeration as required. Turnover of 10–15 tank volumes hourly is a useful target, serving clean water and high oxygen rather than flow alone.

Arrange rounded stones of different sizes over sand, gravel, or both. Roots and branches are suitable additions. Hardy Microsorum, Crinum, and Anubias can be included, and fishes of this genus often rest on their leaves.

Introduce fish only after the system has matured. Carry out regular partial water changes but retain attached growth on rocks and decorations away from the viewing glass. A securely fitted cover is essential because this species can climb glass.

Diet & feeding

The genus grazes biofilm and takes small crustaceans, insect larvae, and other invertebrates. Regular live or frozen Daphnia, Artemia, bloodworms, and similar foods are important in captivity. Some sinking products may be accepted, but dry food and a little visible algae are not a complete maintenance strategy.

Keep mature surfaces available for continued feeding. Check body condition before purchase because badly emaciated fish can be difficult to restore. Weakened individuals need suitable food accessible continuously with minimal competition.

Behaviour & compatibility

Its peaceful disposition allows appropriate stream communities, with compatibility governed by oxygen, current, and feeding requirements. Consider suitable cyprinids, gobies, catfishes, and loaches individually. Other hillstream loaches may provoke minor, generally harmless disputes.

Keep at least six to reflect its natural aggregations. Solitary fish and very small groups are often timid. A larger group also reveals characteristic interactions, including settling close together while facing into the flow.

Sexual dimorphism

Adult females tend to be slightly larger and fuller-bodied than males.

Breeding

Seasonal reproduction in nature is suspected, but aquarium spawning and rearing methods are not established. That seasonal inference is not a tested breeding procedure.

Notes

The two main saddles lie behind the head and over the dorsal-fin base, sometimes connecting along the flank. An occasional additional small blotch can occur farther back, and the tail base is also dark. Compare the shape and position of the principal saddles rather than counting every dark area.

Homaloptera orthogoniata usually has three main saddles. The marks of Homaloptera confuzona are more irregular and commonly remain on the upper body. In H. parclitella, the broad, clearly defined main markings generally extend lower down the flanks.

A flattened underside and horizontally spread paired fins help it cling to surfaces. Movement is mostly crawling and short hops over rocks. Those adaptations do not remove its need for oxygen or make an immature aquarium suitable.
