奥氏平鳍鳅

Overview

Unlike a typical rock-hugging image of hillstream loaches, Homaloptera ogilviei favors slower patches around plants, roots, or leaf litter. Its more downward-oriented paired fins let it perch on fin tips while resting, a useful behavioral distinction.

Distribution & habitat

It occurs across much of the Malay Peninsula in Malaysia and southern Thailand. Clear oxygen-rich streams provide habitat, with fish often near riffles but occupying slower pockets among vegetation and woody or leafy cover.

Aquarium setup

A 60 by 30 cm footprint is the long-term reference. Add roots, wood, and hardy plants to the usual sand, gravel, and rounded rocks, creating resting sites and sheltered current breaks. Clean oxygenated water remains essential, with a suggested turnover of 10–15 tank volumes per hour. Use a mature system, maintain regular partial water changes, retain surface growth, and cover securely.

Diet & feeding

Genus-level feeding guidance emphasizes biofilm and tiny invertebrates. Maintain established hard surfaces and regular small live or frozen meals. Sinking dry foods may be accepted, but recovering thin fish need dependable access to suitable food without competition.

Behaviour & compatibility

Aggression is limited, though similar loaches may squabble. Choose companions with matching water requirements. Six or more encourage confidence; solitary fish and small groups are less bold. Groups may rest close together facing the flow.

Sexual dimorphism

Mature females are typically a little larger and fuller-bodied.

Notes

Irregular dark markings cross a pale pinkish-brown body, with the largest saddle extending into the dorsal fin. The unusual fin orientation may relate to use of plants and wood, but that ecological explanation remains a hypothesis rather than a rule for the genus.
