Overview
Hepsetus odoe is a large ambush predator with formidable teeth. Despite its pike-like appearance, it is a characin. Juveniles in the trade should be assessed against adult space requirements, restricting it to specialist keepers with substantial facilities and experience with predatory fishes.
Distribution & habitat
Records span broad parts of western, central, and southern Africa. Coastal lagoons, rivers, lakes, and swamps are occupied. Marginal vegetation provides hunting cover, while adults tend to favor deeper areas with slow water movement.
Aquarium setup
Juveniles particularly need abundant shelter from wood, smooth stones, planted thickets, and floating vegetation. Heavy waste production calls for effective mechanical and biological filtration. Fit a close, secure lid to prevent escape by jumping.
The listed minimum tank size may still be outgrown, so provision for larger accommodation is necessary. A fish that rests quietly can strike at tremendous speed; cramped surroundings create an injury risk during these bursts of movement.
Diet & feeding
It naturally feeds on fishes, but most aquarium specimens can learn to take nonliving animal foods. Prawn, earthworms, cockle, mussel, and appropriately sized fish provide options. Very small juveniles can begin with bloodworms or small earthworms.
Some individuals initially reject nonliving prey, and occasional fish never accept it. Successful weaning is therefore not automatic; verify feeding both before purchase and throughout any transition.
Behaviour & compatibility
It usually tolerates companions too large to swallow, but aggressive or strongly territorial species are poor partners. Several conspecifics can be maintained together only when their sizes are similar. Smaller members may suffer relentless harassment and can be killed.
Powerful strikes and sharp teeth also require particular care during maintenance and transfers.
Breeding
Aquarium reproduction has not been achieved. Wild fish can become mature at approximately 15 cm. Before spawning, pairs defend territories and construct substantial bubble nests among surface plants.
After hatching, the young move beneath the nest and attach using a gland on the top of the head. The parents guard the nest until this stage. Fry remain attached for about four days, then disperse as the nest breaks apart. For a short time afterward, the gland continues to help them adhere to vegetation and other surfaces.
These observations describe natural reproduction rather than a validated breeding method for an ordinary large aquarium.
Notes
The familiar pike-like shape and trade name should not obscure the species' identity or needs. Ambush feeding combines long quiet periods with abrupt acceleration. Manageable juvenile dimensions do not establish suitability for a conventional adult community.
