Reaching 25 cm, Hemiodus orthonops is a large active shoaler. Newly introduced fish may be nervous, generally becoming more settled with time and the company of a substantial group.
Distribution & habitat
Its range includes floodplain rivers and lakes in Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina.
Aquarium setup
A simple inert sand bed with roots and branches is adequate, or use a planted setup. Floating growth helps reduce skittishness without replacing the need for open swimming room.
Keep oxygen high and maintain water quality carefully. A tightly fitted cover is essential because it can jump substantial distances.
Diet & feeding
Feeding is generally straightforward with live, frozen, and dry choices. Plant matter reportedly forms a substantial natural food component, so include vegetable foods in the aquarium diet.
Behaviour & compatibility
