Overview
An active and peaceful schooling fish, Hemiodus gracilis can be nervous when newly introduced. It is among the more frequently encountered members of its genus and sometimes appears under red-tail trade names. Overall pattern is more useful than a sales name alone.
Distribution & habitat
Its native range includes Venezuela and Brazil, where it uses floodplain rivers and lakes.
Aquarium setup
Start with dimensions around 120 by 45 by 45 cm. Inert sand with wood and roots works well, as does a planted aquarium. Floating vegetation helps the fish feel secure. Keep the water well oxygenated and clean, and fit a tight cover against sudden jumps.
Diet & feeding
It readily takes a broad range of live, frozen, and dry foods. Plant material reportedly forms a substantial part of natural feeding, making regular green foods useful in the aquarium diet.
Behaviour & compatibility
Keep it in a group to help reduce initial nervousness. Its activity should not be mistaken for aggression, but smaller or very quiet companions may still be overwhelmed. Similarly sized peaceful characins, cichlids, and catfish are more appropriate choices.
Sexual dimorphism
A rounder abdomen may indicate a mature female, but the distinction remains uncertain.
Breeding
