Overview
Active and relatively large, Hemiodus argenteus is a shoaling characin that can be nervous on introduction. Swimming room, companions of its own kind, and a secure aquarium cover all deserve attention.
Distribution & habitat
It occurs in Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, and Brazil, inhabiting floodplain rivers and lakes.
Aquarium setup
An inert sand bed with scattered roots and branches makes a simple habitat-style layout, while a planted aquarium also works. Floating vegetation can reduce nervousness. Either approach needs ample room, high oxygen, and careful water-quality maintenance.
Fit the cover closely: this fish can leap considerable distances.
Diet & feeding
Most suitable live, frozen, and dry foods are accepted. Reports of substantial plant consumption in nature make vegetable ingredients an appropriate part of captive feeding.
Behaviour & compatibility
Peaceful behavior does not prevent its size and speed from intimidating smaller or quieter fishes. Comparable characins, suitable South American cichlids, and catfish are candidates. Maintain a group of its own kind; larger groups generally settle more confidently.
Sexual dimorphism
Reliable external sex differences are unconfirmed; mature females may have a rounder abdomen.
Breeding
