Hemigrammus cupreus · Shiny Copper Tetra

Overview

A peaceful small tetra, Hemigrammus cupreus comes from whitewater channels and seasonally flooded habitats. Its natural water is less acidic than blackwater, so requirements should not be borrowed indiscriminately from related blackwater fishes.

Distribution & habitat

Known from Brazil’s Solimões, the Amazon mainstem section between the Peruvian border and its meeting with the Negro near Manaus, it occupies both the river and flooded habitats. Suspended sediment and dissolved ions produce turbid brownish whitewater. Seasonal lakes can hold extensive rafts of floating plants.

Aquarium setup

Sand with wood and roots provides a suitable framework. Floating plants add shade; submerged planting is optional, although a well-maintained planted aquarium also works. Use subdued lighting and conditions appropriate to its whitewater background rather than aiming automatically for heavily stained blackwater.

Diet & feeding

An adaptable omnivore, it accepts fine flakes and granules together with small live or frozen foods. Vary these foods to provide a broader menu.

Behaviour & compatibility

Keep at least six, preferably ten or more, to help the fish settle. It competes poorly with much larger or boisterous companions. Small peaceful tetras, pencilfishes, catfish, and suitable dwarf cichlids are options, provided all share compatible water needs.

Sexual dimorphism

Adult males tend to be smaller, slimmer, and slightly more colorful.

Breeding

Breeding remains unreported. Related-tetra methods offer an experimental approach using a dim dedicated aquarium, fine plants or mops, egg-separating mesh, and gentle sponge filtration. Condition fish with small live foods before trying a pair or group.

If eggs are produced, remove adults and prepare tiny first foods, progressing to microworms and Artemia nauplii as young grow. Shading early stages is part of the related-species approach, but their incubation and free-swimming schedules are not established for this fish.
