Overview

Hemibagrus punctatus is a spotted catfish from southern India's Cauvery system that has appeared only rarely in aquarium commerce. Its wild population status is unclear, and much of the available care guidance remains provisional rather than an established routine for a familiar ornamental fish.

Distribution & habitat

The known range is confined to the Cauvery basin, with records from tributaries including the Kabini, Bhadra, and Moyar. Historical collection dates do not establish either continued survival or complete disappearance at those sites today.

Aquarium setup

Subdued lighting and retreats made from wood, large rocks, or pipes are considered likely preferences. Substantial filtration and a dedicated water-change routine would be required. Accommodation should not be judged merely by the size of a juvenile.

Diet & feeding

Small fishes and invertebrates are probable wild foods, without implying a need for live feeder fish in captivity. Adults may not require daily meals. One or two weekly feedings have been suggested as potentially sufficient, but this should not be treated as a firmly validated schedule.

Behaviour & compatibility

Pronounced territorial aggression is expected, making mixed housing questionable outside very large public-display facilities. This remains a qualified assessment rather than a conclusion supported by extensive aquarium experience.

Notes

Living fish have reddish fins, a relatively short adipose-fin base, and a comparatively short, flattened head. Dark spots arranged in vertical columns are a visible clue, distinct from the thin lines or midlateral stripe found in some similar species.
