概述
'Geophagus' pellegrini

English
Overview
'Geophagus' pellegrini is a yellow-toned eartheater from northwestern Colombia. Mature males can develop a conspicuous forehead hump. Its placement within a related group has been debated, so the quotation marks in its recorded scientific name are retained. Neither a hump nor a yellow-head sales label establishes identity.
Distribution & habitat
The range covers Chocó and neighboring Antioquia, including the San Juan, Atrato, and Baudó drainages. Recorded environments vary from narrow, clear forest streams with moderate or brisk flow to shallow channels opening into pools. Bottoms include sand, gravel, mud, clay, and submerged wood. Aquatic vegetation is present at some sites and absent at others.
Aquarium setup
Allow a footprint of at least about 120 × 45 cm, with soft sand for sifting. Coarse particles interfere with feeding and may damage gills or cause internal problems if swallowed. Dim lighting, roots, wood, and smooth stones are useful. Heavy leaf deposits can be broken up and suspended during feeding, burdening filtration.
Only use a mature aquarium with stable water chemistry. Generous external or sump filtration should be paired with weekly water changes of at least 50–70%. Capture suspended particles mechanically and protect equipment against sand abrasion and blockage. Disperse filter returns rather than imposing strong currents. Inadequate maintenance can accompany head and lateral-line damage or poor growth.
Diet & feeding
The related species group obtains food by sifting substrate. Recorded natural foods include small invertebrates, seeds, and organic debris. In captivity, combine fine prepared foods with small live or frozen items and plant-containing foods such as spirulina preparations. Even adults need small particles. Three or four modest meals daily suit this feeding pattern.
Behaviour & compatibility
It is usually peaceful outside reproduction and does not hunt fish more than a few millimeters long. Breeding behavior deserves separate consideration. Pair bonds are brief and limited to spawning, so one male and one female should not be assumed to form a lasting partnership.
Sexual dimorphism
Adult males are larger, with more extended unpaired fins. Their forehead hump develops at maturity and can become pronounced.
Breeding
The female takes responsibility for mouthbrooding from the egg stage. Weak, temporary pair bonds distinguish this arrangement from cooperative pairs that exchange young. Breeding plans should account for the brooding female rather than assuming shared mouthbrooding duties.
Notes
Its yellow coloration helps separate it from 'Geophagus' steindachneri and 'Geophagus' crassilabris. Fish sold under this name have often belonged to those relatives, making provenance and locality valuable identification aids.
