English
Overview
Gastrodermus napoensis is a peaceful shoaling cory that can arrive in mixed shipments with similar species. A dark patch in the upper dorsal fin helps identify males, whereas females are much harder to separate. Correct identification is especially relevant when assembling breeding fish.
Distribution & habitat
Detailed locality records name the Napo, Aguarico, and Nanay rivers in Ecuador and Peru. Habitat includes small tributaries, creeks, flooded forest, and sand banks.
Aquarium setup
Sand, wood, roots, and dried leaves under dim lighting create an appropriate sheltered setting. Replace aging leaves before decay spoils the water. Planted community aquariums are also suitable. Water quality and a clean floor are more important than a particular decorative style; avoid undergravel filtration and prevent waste buildup around the barbels.
Diet & feeding
Use sinking pellets or tablets as part of a varied omnivorous menu, supplemented with water fleas, brine shrimp, bloodworms, and other suitable live or frozen foods. Deliberate feeding is essential rather than reliance on leftovers.
Behaviour & compatibility
Keep at least six together. Small peaceful characins, cyprinids, labyrinth fishes, dwarf cichlids, and gentle catfishes are possible partners. Large or aggressive species are unsuitable.
Sexual dimorphism
Females are often slightly larger and noticeably fuller, particularly before laying. Males have the useful upper dorsal-fin marking, but females can remain difficult to identify to species from pattern alone.
Breeding
Prepare a separate aquarium with spawning cover and air-powered filtration. A ratio of two males per female is a useful starting point. Condition adults with varied foods, then consider cooler replacement water and increased circulation and aeration when females are ripe. Season and maturity may influence the response.
Courtship includes T-shaped pairing, followed by the female carrying small numbers of eggs between her pelvic fins before attaching them to glass or another surface. Separate eggs and adults afterward. Use matching, oxygenated water and remove fungused eggs. Hatching usually takes three to five days. After yolk absorption, feed microworms or newly hatched brine shrimp. A thin sandy floor may benefit the fry without reducing their need for clean water.
Notes
Similar species can occur together in nature and share export shipments. Do not assume every fish in one purchase belongs to the same species. Occasional air gulps are normal; pectoral spines can catch in nets or injure handlers.
