Overview
A peaceful, shy nonannual killifish, Fundulopanchax scheeli inhabits permanent streams and ponds. Competition at feeding time can be more consequential than overt aggression, so companions need careful selection.
Distribution & habitat
Its range includes Cameroon and Nigeria, where small streams and ponds in a few coastal-rainforest areas support the species.
Aquarium setup
A 45 by 25 by 25 cm aquarium is a useful maintenance reference. Dark substrate, wood, and thick planting offer retreats, while floating plants soften overhead light. Peat-based material can be used in the substrate or filtration. Fit the lid carefully: this species is an accomplished jumper.
Diet & feeding
Live or frozen Daphnia, bloodworms, and comparable small foods are preferred, though most fish also accept quality flakes. In a mixed aquarium, watch this fish feeding directly rather than assuming that food distribution guarantees access.
Behaviour & compatibility
A carefully chosen community can work, but a general-purpose mixed tank is inappropriate. Small peaceful tetras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids, Corydoras, and other quiet fishes are possible candidates. Vigorous feeders can readily outcompete this timid resident.
Sexual dimorphism
Males display brighter colors than females.
Notes
Its permanent-water ecology identifies it as nonannual. Dry-storage methods used for other killifishes should not be assumed to be required here.
