贡氏真吸唇鲿

Overview

Rare in the hobby, Euchilichthys guentheri is an African suckermouth catfish from fast river sections in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is relatively peaceful toward suitable companions but becomes territorial toward its own kind as it matures. Juvenile group housing should not be assumed to remain suitable at adulthood.

Distribution & habitat

Known from the Democratic Republic of Congo, it occupies rapidly flowing river habitat. Water movement and oxygen supply are basic requirements rather than optional refinements to its aquarium.

Aquarium setup

Build the bottom from sand or fine gravel, smooth stones, and wood that offers cover. Filtration and circulation pumps should keep the water moving and well oxygenated. Low circulation or poor oxygenation is unsuitable. Plants are not essential, and algal growth can be retained.

Diet & feeding

An omnivore, it accepts small live and frozen foods such as water fleas, brine shrimp, and bloodworms. Include vegetable foods, for example cucumber and algae wafers. A sucker-shaped mouth should not be taken to mean that incidental algae on the glass are a complete ration.

Behaviour & compatibility

Potential companions include suitable African tetras, other current-loving catfishes, and river cichlids. Choose them for compatible conditions and size. Young fish can be grouped, but adult conspecific territoriality requires reassessment of space and shelter as they grow.

Notes

Elliptical mouthparts and a larger adult size help distinguish this genus from the smaller, round-mouthed Chiloglanis. Unlike South American loricariids, it does not possess armored body plates. Similar appearance alone therefore provides a poor basis for identification or care assumptions.
