Overview
A small stream catfish, Erethistes maesotensis spends much of its time buried or sheltered in caves and is mainly active at night. Care centers on cool, oxygen-rich water and reliable access to food rather than frequent daytime visibility.
Distribution & habitat
Known records are limited to one Salween tributary on the Myanmar–Thailand border. Its habitat is shallow, fast-flowing water over a rocky bed.
Aquarium setup
A 45 by 30 by 30 cm aquarium is suggested. Soft sand allows burial, while smooth stones and wood provide crevices and retreats. Maintain high oxygen levels and avoid excessively warm water. Bright lighting keeps the fish concealed. Each individual in a group should have access to its own refuge.
Diet & feeding
Small invertebrates are the main natural food. Most suitably sized live, frozen, and dry offerings are accepted in captivity. Feed after lights out in an illuminated tank so that daytime companions do not take its entire share.
Behaviour & compatibility
Generally harmless to companions, it suits small fish adapted to similar stream conditions. Avoid crowded bottom communities, where it is readily outcompeted for food. Mild territorial behavior toward its own species is possible, making separate shelters useful.
Sexual dimorphism
Mature females are broader-bodied than males.
Breeding
