Overview

Epiplatys dageti, the red-chinned panchax, is a comparatively hardy, readily bred killifish that spends much of its time in the upper water. The familiar red-throated form has a long aquarium history, but males from every population do not share that coloration.

Distribution & habitat

The known range includes southwestern Ghana, southern Côte d'Ivoire, and southern Liberia. The type locality is a swamp near Port Bouet outside Abidjan. Coastal savanna wetlands are typical habitats, mostly fresh water but locally brackish.

Aquarium setup

Allow a footprint of at least about 60 × 30 cm. Dense planting or a natural-style layout of sand, roots, and branches provides cover. Leaf litter adds shelter and supports microorganisms that can feed fry. Subdued lighting, shade-tolerant plants, and floating vegetation are suitable.

Diet & feeding

The wild diet probably includes aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates and other zooplankton. Suitable dry foods are accepted, but add small live or frozen foods daily, such as Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, and Moina. Small crickets and fruit flies can also be used. Feeding those insects flakes or vegetable material beforehand improves their value as prey.

Behaviour & compatibility

This peaceful species can suit a carefully assembled community. Similarly sized, mild-mannered characins, cyprinids, small catfishes, and other compatible fishes are candidates. Its preference for the upper water can complement suitable companions using other areas. Keep at least six panchax to reduce shyness and encourage varied interactions.

Sexual dimorphism

Males grow larger, have stronger colors, and develop longer fins. Elongation of the lower caudal-fin lobe becomes particularly evident with maturity.

Breeding

Fry may appear in a mature, well-covered species aquarium. If the adults live in a community, prepare a separate breeding aquarium with moss, Riccia, floating-plant roots, or spawning mops. Gentle sponge filtration can be used.

A pair or one male with two or more females can spawn. Replace the egg-bearing medium every few days for separate incubation, or leave it until fry appear. Adults do eat eggs and young, so separation is advisable when raising larger numbers. At about 21 °C, incubation usually takes 11–14 days. Cooler conditions around 21–23 °C apparently favor a more balanced sex ratio, whereas higher temperatures may produce more males.

Mature plants and a little leaf litter can supply early microscopic foods. In cleaner rearing setups, provide rotifers or similar tiny live foods before moving on to Artemia nauplii. Exclude snails, shrimp, and other larger invertebrates that may eat the eggs.

Notes

The form commonly called monroviae has a red or orange male throat and usually five dark flank bars. The other familiar form lacks that throat color and usually has six bars. Former subspecies labels remain in circulation, but the forms interbreed and produce fertile offspring. Keep reliable locality records to maintain separate bloodlines.
