Overview
Dianema longibarbis is a gentle catfish recognized by the row of spots along its side. Newly imported wild fish can be delicate, but settled individuals are often hardy and may live beyond ten years. A small group is particularly appealing because the fish frequently swim together in midwater.
Distribution & habitat
Its Amazon range spans Peru and Brazil. It favors slower creeks, tributaries, floodplain lakes, and ponds away from the main river channels.
Aquarium setup
Sand with intertwined wood, roots, and a scattering of dried leaves offers a naturalistic arrangement. Other layouts also work when cover is abundant; densely planted aquariums are especially suitable.
Diet & feeding
Offer a varied combination of sinking prepared food and small live or frozen items, including bloodworms, brine shrimp, and chopped earthworms. Settled fish commonly learn to feed at the surface as well.
Behaviour & compatibility
Peaceful tetras, gentle cichlids, corys, and smaller loricariids make reasonable companions. Even small tankmates are generally tolerated, although tiny fry can be swallowed. Its retiring nature makes large, aggressive communities unsuitable. Three to six together are more outgoing than a solitary fish, with little aggression within the group.
Sexual dimorphism
Males have slightly thickened leading pectoral rays. Mature females may have a fuller abdomen, but this is a tentative distinction.
Breeding
Captive reproductive details are sparse. Conflicting accounts for a related species mention both bubble nests and substrate pits, leaving the mode for this fish uncertain. A possible trial begins with four to six adults, secured floating material as a potential nest support, plentiful live food, and cooler replacement water. If eggs appear, remove adults to reduce predation. Fry should be able to take brine shrimp nauplii or microworms after consuming their yolk.
Seasonal simulation has also been suggested: a period of lower water followed by cooler, softer replenishment and increased feeding may imitate the transition into the rains. Season and atmospheric pressure may influence responses, so this remains an experimental approach.
Notes
The robustness of acclimated fish should not obscure the vulnerability of recent wild imports. Longevity beyond a decade is a reported potential, not a fixed expectation for every individual.
