Overview

The widely distributed Cyprinodon variegatus commonly occurs in coastal habitats ranging from brackish to highly saline. Aquarium planning should consider the origin of the fish, rather than allowing its small size to obscure differences in salinity or the space needed by a group.

Distribution & habitat

Records extend from Massachusetts southward along the Atlantic side of North America to northeastern Mexico, the Bahamas, and the Antilles. A small number also come from Venezuela in northeastern South America.

Coastal salt marshes, lagoons, and estuaries are typical environments. On San Salvador Island in the Bahamas, a related group of fishes lives together while specializing on different resources. This species appears to have an ancestral connection to that radiation, rather than necessarily sharing every specialization of those relatives.

Aquarium setup

A base around 60 × 30 cm is barely suitable for a pair. A larger aquarium or container is preferable for a group. Plants and spawning mops can provide ample cover and interrupted sightlines without complicated decoration.

An air-driven sponge filter, if filtration is used, minimizes the risk to eggs and fry. Lighting is secondary, and filamentous algae can be allowed to develop. A broad natural salinity range does not establish one universal salt dosage for every aquarium population.

Notes

The minnow in its English common name does not place it among the cyprinid minnows. Specialized morphology and resource use in related island species should not be transferred indiscriminately to this fish. Keeping locality information helps distinguish the ecological backgrounds of different stocks.
