食性与喂食

Overview
An elongated body and large upward-facing jaws support rapid scale biting in Cyprinodon desquamator. Its small size should not be mistaken for harmless community behavior.
Distribution & habitat
It is confined to six hypersaline lakes on San Salvador Island, Bahamas. These shallow waters support fish mainly in littoral mats of larger algae and aquatic grasses.
Diet & feeding
Specialized scale feeding accounts for roughly half the diet. Body form and jaw mechanics allow fast bites at other fishes. The stated proportion does not identify the remaining food components.
Sexual dimorphism
Mature males show metallic blue anteriorly above and dark pigmentation in the median fins rather than the familiar black tail edge of many relatives. Breeding males have gray to black undersides. Females and juveniles possess a black-and-white eyespot on the dorsal fin.
Breeding
Males have been observed guarding breeding areas in shallow water. Reproduction occurs year-round, apparently peaking during summer.
Notes
Similar-looking island relatives have sharply different feeding specializations. The unusually large upward-facing jaws and elongated body are useful clues, with breeding males becoming strongly darkened.
