Overview
Conservation breeding is the central reason to maintain Cyprinodon alvarezi. Historical accounts document loss from nature by the late 1990s after its sole spring habitat dried, leaving captive populations. It is consequently unsuitable as an incidental community fish.
Distribution & habitat
Its original range was a single isolated spring near El Potosí, Nuevo León, northern Mexico. The clear, richly vegetated pond was affected by introduced fishes and continued water extraction for irrigation and other uses, ultimately drying out.
Aquarium setup
Use a larger tank or container for a group than the minimum suggested for one pair. Plants and spawning mops divide sightlines and provide shelter. Air-driven sponge filtration is suitable where eggs or fry may be present. Lighting is not critical, and filamentous algae can be encouraged.
Behaviour & compatibility
A dedicated species aquarium is preferable, especially for preserving a breeding population. Males need room to establish separate territories, although two or more can usually coexist in an appropriately sized and structured setup. General-community care should not be the priority.
