English
Overview
The peaceful Cyprichromis microlepidotus needs open upper water, a substantial group, and small food items. It is relatively uncommon in trade. Locality variants include blue- and yellow-tailed fish and should be maintained as separate breeding lines.
Distribution & habitat
It is endemic to Lake Tanganyika, mainly in the north with scattered eastern-shore records. Open water above sandy areas and scattered rocks supports large groups, sometimes mixed with related fishes.
Aquarium setup
A deep aquarium allows rockwork to occupy the lower portion while leaving the upper water clear for swimming. Fit a reliable cover because excited fish can jump.
Diet & feeding
A small mouth is adapted to zooplankton. Offer appropriately sized live or frozen bloodworms, Artemia, and Daphnia; dry foods are also accepted. Several small meals suit its natural pattern of feeding through the day better than a single large portion.
Behaviour & compatibility
Rowdy fishes can outcompete it, and aggressive Mbuna are unsuitable. Peaceful Tanganyikan rock or shell dwellers using different areas are better candidates. Keep at least eight to ten, with larger groups worthwhile when space permits. Several males may then show full coloration.
Sexual dimorphism
Males carry stronger colors than females.
Breeding
Males establish three-dimensional territories in open water, excluding rivals but allowing females and other species through. Eggs are released in midwater and immediately collected by the female. Egg-like structures at the tips of the male's pelvic fins participate in fertilization. Several females per male and a wide, deep species aquarium support breeding.
Broods are small, usually only five to ten eggs, and may be carried for four weeks without feeding. Leave an unharassed female in place to limit stress-related loss; lengthy separation can also disrupt her return. Naturally released young shelter near rock crevices and immediately take Artemia nauplii. Adults usually leave them unharmed. Earlier artificial removal requires experience.
Notes
Males from one locality may themselves vary in color and pattern. Different locality forms interbreed, so maintain provenance and separate lines rather than using wild mixed shoals as a reason for captive crosses.
