Overview

An upper-water predator with a gar-like outline, Ctenolucius hujeta is a characin rather than a true gar. It is usually placid toward fish too large to swallow, while smaller fish remain prey. Spacious, mature housing with surface cover is important.

Distribution & habitat

The range runs westward from the Maracaibo basin in Venezuela through northern Colombia’s Magdalena system to the Sinú. Accounts suggest calmer habitat and hunting around surface or marginal vegetation. Modified lip membranes aid breathing under oxygen-poor conditions, without removing the need for good aquarium water quality.

Aquarium setup

Suggested dimensions start with a 180 by 60 cm footprint and at least 30 cm water depth. Surface vegetation is particularly useful; sand, leaves, and wood can complete the setting without blocking upper-water space. Set lighting to suit the plants.

Use a secure cover and effective mature filtration. Arrange returns to avoid turbulent flow. Weekly 30–50% changes support stable conditions, while immature biological systems are unsuitable.

Diet & feeding

Wild prey consists mainly of small fish and insects, but dead food is usually accepted. Offer suitably sized worms, shrimp, fish strips, shellfish, and well-fed insects. Control portions because it will gorge when allowed. Avoid mammalian or avian meat and routine feeder fish.

Behaviour & compatibility

Peaceful companions that feed lower in the tank and cannot be swallowed are preferable. Avoid territorial, highly competitive, or surface-dwelling fish. Conspecific aggression is uncommon; juveniles school strongly and adults still assemble intermittently. Four or more are suggested.

Sexual dimorphism

Mature females tend to be slightly larger and rounder. Males have a proportionally larger anal fin with thicker rays and a convex edge, compared with the more concave female margin.

Breeding

One detailed captive account describes breeding with a pair or a male-biased group. Male chasing, displays, and biting preceded paired surface swimming. The rear part of each fish rose above water as the male clasped the female’s genital papilla with his anal fin, releasing eggs and sperm at intervals over roughly three hours.

That event produced over a thousand eggs, hatching after about 20 hours at 27 °C, with free swimming around 60 hours. First foods included rotifers, Cyclops, and Artemia nauplii. Adequate feeding roughly three times daily was important because hungry fry quickly became cannibalistic. These figures describe the recorded event rather than guaranteed outcomes.
