Overview

Corydoras simulatus is a peaceful, social armored catfish with substantial pattern variation between collection localities. Some dark-sided forms have circulated under other aquarium labels. Neither a trade name nor a single marking is enough to establish that such fish belong to a different species.

Distribution & habitat

It is known only from the upper Meta drainage in Colombia. The original collection locality lies in the Ocoá River near Puerto López.

Aquarium setup

Fine sand makes a suitable floor. Rounded gravel is another option if maintained in very clean condition. Arrange some shelter so the group can settle securely; the rest of the decoration is largely a matter of layout.

Diet & feeding

Provide an omnivorous selection of sinking foods and small live or frozen supplements, including bloodworms and aquatic worms. Consistent, varied feeding is required. Do not expect the fish to live on scraps missed by other inhabitants or to eliminate the need for cleaning.

Behaviour & compatibility

Keep a minimum group of four to six. Its gentle disposition and social behavior make company of its own kind particularly valuable.

Sexual dimorphism

Females grow slightly larger and develop a wider, rounder outline than males, especially when carrying eggs.

Notes

Geographic pattern differences have contributed to historical misidentifications. Bony plates cover the flanks, while a modified intestine permits supplementary air breathing; occasional surface gulps are normal. Move fish with care because pectoral spines can cause painful punctures. Mild toxicity of secretions around the spine bases has been proposed, but remains uncertain.
