Overview

Corydoras pastazensis is a peaceful shoaling catfish marked by many small dark spots. The dark band near the front of the body becomes narrower or breaks apart toward the underside. It needs companions and deliberate feeding rather than a solitary role as an aquarium cleaner.

Distribution & habitat

Known collections come from Ecuador's upper Pastaza basin and the Ucayali and Puinahua rivers in Peru. Some records from the Tigre and Napo probably concern a closely related form whose taxonomic treatment remains disputed.

Aquarium setup

Fine sand is preferred. Rounded gravel is usable if kept very clean. Include sheltered areas while retaining sufficient space for the group to move together.

Diet & feeding

Feed an omnivorous selection of sinking prepared foods and small live or frozen items, such as bloodworms and aquatic worms. A varied, dedicated ration supports condition. Leftovers from other fish are not a dependable diet, and these catfishes do not replace substrate maintenance.

Behaviour & compatibility

Its gentle and social behavior favors a group of at least six to eight individuals.

Sexual dimorphism

Females generally become larger and noticeably broader than males. Their fuller outline is especially apparent when eggs are developing.

Notes

The Tigre form has been treated both as distinct and as part of this species. Its larger, fewer spots and more continuous dark band contrast with the fine spotting and interrupted lower band described here, but the naming dispute remains unresolved. Occasional trips to swallow air reflect intestinal air breathing. Rigid pectoral spines can injure handlers; a mildly toxic secretion at their bases has been suggested but should not be stated as certain.
