Overview

Corydoras aurofrenatus has two dark flank blotches and elongated tail lobes, with the upper lobe extending farther. Previously traded under CW005, it belongs to a group in which historical names and species boundaries can complicate aquarium identification.

Distribution & habitat

The known range includes much of the Paraguay-Paraná system in Paraguay, with additional records from Argentina and Bolivia. The original collection locality is associated with the Trementina, a tributary of the Aquidabán in Paraguay.

Aquarium setup

Provide fine sand or carefully cleaned, rounded gravel. Include some cover so the fish can feel secure. The remaining arrangement can be adapted to the aquarium without a rigid decorative formula.

Diet & feeding

An omnivorous feeding plan should combine sinking prepared foods with small live or frozen offerings, such as bloodworms and aquatic worms. Deliberate feeding is necessary. Neither a diet of accidental leftovers nor a role as a substitute for cleaning meets its needs.

Sexual dimorphism

Females generally become larger and, at maturity, show a wider and fuller body than males. The difference is strongest when they carry eggs.

Notes

One flank blotch lies behind the head and another beneath the adipose fin; striped dorsal and caudal fins provide further identifying features. A proposed synonymy with another named form has not gained broad acceptance, so old trade labels should be treated carefully. Intestinal air breathing explains occasional surface visits to gulp air. Move fish cautiously because the pectoral spines can puncture skin. A mildly toxic role for secretions around those spines has been suggested but remains uncertain.
