Overview

Peaceful and mainly upper-dwelling, Copella carsevennensis has a history of confusion with Copella arnoldi. This species places eggs among submerged plants and the male guards them. The aerial spawning behavior of its relative should not be assigned to it.

Distribution & habitat

The apparent range includes coastal rivers in Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, and Brazil's northeastern state of Amapá. The original locality name Carsevenne refers to an Amapá coastal river, despite French Guiana also appearing in the early account.

Aquarium setup

Allow surface dimensions of at least about 75 × 30 cm. A densely planted aquarium or paludarium works well, with floating plants and shaded roots or branches. Much of its time is spent near the top, where plants reaching the surface provide structure.

Dry leaves add cover and encourage microorganisms that can supplement fry food. Keep the water oxygenated with mild surface movement. Stable chemistry matters, so wait for the aquarium to mature before introduction.

Diet & feeding

Tiny invertebrates and other zooplankton probably form much of the natural diet. Offer suitable-sized prepared foods alongside daily Artemia nauplii, small water fleas, grindal worms, or similar live and frozen foods. Small crickets and fruit flies can also be used after feeding the insects flakes or vegetable matter.

Behaviour & compatibility

Its peaceful nature does not guarantee suitability for every community. Similarly sized small characins, smaller bottom-dwelling catfishes, and diminutive nonpredatory cichlids are candidates where requirements match.

Keep a mixed-sex group of at least eight to ten. Peaceful schooling companions can improve confidence. Males display while competing for females and establish small temporary territories around prospective spawning sites.

Sexual dimorphism

Males become considerably larger, more colorful, and longer-finned. Females are rounder-bodied, especially when carrying eggs.

Breeding

A mature planted aquarium may produce occasional fry, but a separate breeding tank improves control. Use air-driven sponge filtration and plants, or artificial substitutes, floating or reaching the surface.

A male chooses a site and attracts females. Eggs may be placed on a broad leaf or scattered among finer vegetation when suitable leaves are absent. Remove females after spawning and leave the male to tend the clutch. Hatching generally takes 36–72 hours. Care ends when fry emerge, and the male may then eat them, so remove him as well.

Begin feeding with Paramecium or very fine preparations around 5–50 μm. Introduce Artemia nauplii and microworms once the fry are large enough. Growth is slow.

Notes

Proposed differences from Copella arnoldi include the absence of white centers on some male scales, a horizontal breeding band, and thin dark margins on certain fins, together with submerged egg deposition. Some taxonomic treatments separate the fishes while others combine them, leaving historical names and range records confused.

The absence of a dark snout-to-eye stripe and of a black triangle in the lower tail lobe provides further identification clues when assessed with the overall pattern.
