Overview

The small bottom-dwelling cichlid Congochromis dimidiatus benefits from soft sand, caves, and stable water. Males defend territories, though the fish is not exceptionally aggressive. A breeding pair's division of care and later changes in its relationship merit observation.

Distribution & habitat

The type locality is near Bangui on the Ubangi River in the Central African Republic. Museum records extend through the central Congo basin in the Republic of the Congo and DR Congo, but some identifications predate separation of similar species. Accounts mention larger rivers and lakes as well as small forest streams and swamp pools, leaving the habitat picture unresolved.

Aquarium setup

Provide soft sand and caves made from pots, coconut shells, or short tubes, with roots and branches forming shaded retreats. Leaves add cover and support microscopic food useful to fry. Dim lighting, shade-tolerant plants, and floating cover suit the arrangement. Gentle filtration with slight surface movement is enough. Use only an established, stable aquarium. One pair is the practical choice for most tanks; several pairs require substantially more space.

Diet & feeding

The genus takes detritus, plant matter, and small invertebrates from the bottom. Offer varied fine prepared foods, including spirulina-rich products, with occasional live or frozen bloodworms, Daphnia, Artemia, and mosquito larvae.

Behaviour & compatibility

Small peaceful schooling fishes can work as companions. Exclude larger bottom dwellers that compete for food and territory, and avoid other cichlids unless the aquarium is very large. Breeding pairs can be kept alone or with small-mouthed, nonpredatory dither fish.

Sexual dimorphism

Females are more colorful, with a violet abdomen and one or more dark spots toward the rear of the dorsal fin. Adult males are larger and more orange, with a slightly spade-shaped tail and short dorsal and anal extensions. Females lack the silver scale patch around the genital papilla found in some relatives.

Breeding

Members of the genus form pairs and spawn in caves, with both adults contributing to care. Soft water and gentle sponge filtration are advisable. Remove surplus fish when a pair forms from a juvenile group. Courting females curve their bodies and quiver while displaying the violet belly; receptive males intensify reddish-orange tones, and the lateral stripe can fade in both sexes.

After laying, the female tends the brood inside while the male guards outside. The pair may excavate the entrance. Eggs hatch in about three days, and fry swim freely around eight or nine days after spawning. They can then take Artemia nauplii, microworms, and appropriately small planktonic crustaceans. Care may last five to six weeks, but some young males turn against their mates, requiring removal of the female.

Notes

Older literature uses a different genus. A dark flank stripe continuing into the tail is one identification clue, but historical locality records require caution.
