Overview

Narrow lower-flank bars and dense small upper-body spots characterize Cobitis hugowolfeldi. This southwestern Korean loach needs stable, clean, highly oxygenated water. Circulation is useful only as part of that overall husbandry.

Distribution & habitat

It is endemic to South Korea, with records in Jeollanam-do’s Yeongsan and Tamjin systems and minor drainages. Shallow streams with moderate or fast flow appear favored. Sand, gravel, small rocks, and boulders form the bed, with bankside vegetation and some submerged leaves.

Aquarium setup

Use at least a 100 by 30 cm base with substantial filtration. A turnover near ten to fifteen tank volumes per hour is suggested, supplemented by aeration or circulation as needed. Sand or gravel, rounded rocks, and wood provide structure. Hardy attached plants add shelter and grazing surfaces. Establish the system fully before introduction and maintain regular partial water changes.

Diet & feeding

Small benthic invertebrates, especially midge larvae, are the main prey. Offer varied sinking prepared food with regular live or frozen supplements such as water fleas, brine shrimp, and insect larvae.

Behaviour & compatibility

Compatible small stream fishes, selected rheophilic gobies, and peaceful loaches can share suitable accommodation. Genus-level husbandry favors groups of at least four. Avoid aggressive or strongly territorial bottom-dwellers; eggs and fry may still be vulnerable to predation.

Sexual dimorphism

Females are generally larger and heavier-bodied. Mature males have an elongated first pectoral ray and a thickened lamina at the base of the second.

Notes

The combination of narrow flank bars and dense upper-body spotting helps comparison with similar Korean loaches. Movable subocular spines can erect under stress and catch in netting.
