多须盘唇鲿 · African Suckermouth Catfish

Overview

Small and peaceful, Chiloglanis polypogon is an African suckermouth catfish whose requirements center on moving, oxygen-rich water. Its calm temperament does not make a low-circulation aquarium suitable, and a sucker-shaped mouth does not make it equivalent to a South American pleco.

Distribution & habitat

It occurs in Nigeria and Cameroon, inhabiting fast hill streams. Strong water movement is therefore a defining feature to reproduce in its aquarium.

Aquarium setup

Use sand or fine gravel with smooth stones of different sizes. Wood can create sheltered areas. Provide substantial circulation with pumps and maintain high oxygen levels; weakly moving water is unsuitable. Plants are optional, and useful algal growth need not be removed from the rocks.

Diet & feeding

This omnivore accepts small live or frozen water fleas, brine shrimp, and bloodworms. Include plant foods such as cucumber and algae-based wafers so that animal foods do not become the entire ration.

Behaviour & compatibility

It is peaceful with its own kind and can be maintained in a group. Other current-loving fishes are potential companions, including appropriately chosen African tetras, stream catfishes, and river cichlids. Their environmental and space requirements still need to agree with the setup.

Sexual dimorphism

The male has a lengthened genital papilla. Enlarged tail or anal fins seen in some other members of the genus should not automatically be used to sex this species.

Notes

Many Chiloglanis look alike, and infrequent imports make precise identification difficult. Their round mouthparts and small size help distinguish the genus from other African suckermouth catfishes. They also lack the bony body armor characteristic of South American loricariids.
