Charax condei · Small-scale Glass Tetra

Overview

An uncommon small glassy characin, Charax condei is not notably aggressive but does prey on much smaller fishes. Group maintenance, dim light, and carefully sized companions suit its shaded blackwater origins better than a busy general community.

Distribution & habitat

Known records are restricted to Brazil’s Negro basin. Slow streams, tributaries, and smaller rivers run beneath dense forest canopy, with fallen branches and leaves below. Humic material darkens the mineral-poor water.

Aquarium setup

Sand, wood, twisted roots, and dried leaves create cover and lightly stained water. Replace aging leaves before excessive decay fouls the aquarium. Aquatic plants are not essential to a natural-style arrangement, although a well-maintained planted aquarium also works. Use subdued light, with care adapted to fish that are likely wild-caught.

Diet & feeding

Wild fish take small aquatic invertebrates and smaller fishes. Settled individuals generally accept common aquarium foods, allowing a varied captive menu rather than dependence on live feeder fish.

Behaviour & compatibility

Keep at least six, preferably ten or more, to help the fish settle. Similarly sized characins, small catfish, and peaceful cichlids are possible companions. Much smaller fishes remain prey, so compatibility depends on swallowing risk as well as overt aggression.

Sexual dimorphism

A confirmed external sexing method is lacking. Gravid females may become rounder, as in many characins, but this remains a tentative clue.

Breeding

Captive breeding may not yet have been achieved. Similar-sized characins suggest possible approaches, but they do not establish a tested timetable for this species.
