Overview

Often confused with Channa argus, Channa maculata is an important food fish as well as a predator encountered in captivity. Two or three rounded marks on the caudal peduncle and differences in fin-ray and scale counts help distinguish the species. Aquaculture hybrids between them add another identification complication.

Distribution & habitat

The native range includes southeastern China's coastal drainages, Hainan, Hong Kong, and northern Vietnam south to the Quang Binh region. Established introduced populations occur in Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, Madagascar, and Oahu in Hawaii; these should be distinguished from natural distribution.

Still or slow river sections and backwaters with silty beds and abundant vegetation are favored.

Diet & feeding

Natural prey comprises invertebrates, amphibians, and smaller fishes. Most individuals adjust to nonliving animal foods. Bloodworms, small earthworms, and chopped shrimp suit young fish; adults can receive fish flesh, shrimp, mussels, and larger earthworms. Small insects are also suitable, preferably fed fish flakes or plant material before being offered.

Adults need not eat daily, even in warm conditions, and fatty items should be limited to no more than weekly. Dry food acceptance does not make it an appropriate staple. Terrestrial meats such as beef heart or chicken are unsuitable routine foods. Live feeder fish are unnecessary and can introduce pathogens.

Breeding

The pair embrace during spawning. Several thousand eggs float at the surface without a bubble nest, and both parents defend eggs and young. Hybridization with C. argus is possible, making parental and production records particularly relevant for cultured stock.

Notes

Supplementary respiratory structures above the gills let snakeheads breathe air, and trips to the surface are normal. Identification should combine tail-base markings with other features; a single pattern detail is insufficient when young fish or possible hybrids are involved.
