Overview
The distinctive head hump of Chanda pulcinella makes this active freshwater perchlet recognizable. A peaceful temperament does not prevent its size and movement from unsettling small neighbors, so choose companions with the adult fish in mind.
Distribution & habitat
Endemic to Myanmar, it inhabits large clear streams with rapid flow and plentiful oxygen. Smooth, water-worn rocks and boulders commonly form the substrate.
Aquarium setup
Allow ample swimming room. Plants, stones, and wood can be arranged to suit the aquarium because decor choice is flexible. Salt addition is unnecessary for this freshwater species.
Diet & feeding
Suitable pellets and flakes are accepted. Supplement them regularly with live or frozen foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp rather than relying entirely on dry feeding.
Behaviour & compatibility
Comparable rainbowfishes, barbs, and loaches are potential companions. Avoid small fish easily disturbed by its activity. Groups can be maintained; occasional disagreements generally amount to brief chasing.
Sexual dimorphism
The head hump appears smaller in females, although this difference is tentative.
Breeding
Aquarium breeding is unrecorded.
Notes
The hump forms from an extension of the spine and lacks scales. Artificially dyed specimens have appeared in trade; avoid them because the procedure harms the fish and commonly shortens life.
