Overview

The unresolved Chaetostoma sp. L187a is a spotted pleco from cool, oxygen-rich mountain streams. Specialized flow requirements and territoriality between conspecifics demand more planning than its generally amicable behavior might suggest.

Distribution & habitat

It comes from Colombia, inhabiting fast mountain waters over rock. Streams are typically clear and cool, with relatively high dissolved mineral content.

Aquarium setup

A pair can use an aquarium around 75 × 30 × 30 cm, with larger quarters for a group. Sand, smooth pebbles, and rocks of varied sizes provide individual shelters. Flow equipment should maintain movement and oxygenation. Excessive warmth or low oxygen makes the setting unsuitable.

Many plants struggle in these conditions, although hardy attached types may be tried. Check new fish for a full abdomen and nonsunken eyes; severe emaciation should not be overlooked.

Diet & feeding

It is omnivorous. Combine plant foods such as blanched spinach, zucchini, and cucumber with live or frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp. Algae wafers and other dry foods are also accepted.

Behaviour & compatibility

Generally friendly toward other fishes, it still needs companions compatible with cool, oxygenated moving water. Conspecifics compete for territory. Several can usually coexist if space and layout allow each its own rock retreat.

Sexual dimorphism

Males tend to be slimmer and develop much broader heads and larger pectoral fins at maturity.

Breeding

Confirmed aquarium reproduction is unavailable for L187a. Experience with related L187b suggests a possible approach: males defend rock caves, sometimes excavating them, and guard eggs. Reported hatching takes seven to ten days, with active feeding another two or three days later. Continuous suitable food and small daily water changes support those fry. These timings are comparative guidance, not verified L187a results.

Changes of roughly 50–70% with slightly cooler water every few days have been suggested as a stimulus. Stay within appropriate temperatures and treat this as an attempt rather than a guaranteed trigger.

Notes

Similar codes do not establish identical species. Keep L187, L187a, and L187b records distinct, particularly when documenting reproduction.
