Chaetostoma formosae · Striped Bulldog Pleco

Overview

Chaetostoma formosae is a stream-specialist pleco sold under codes including L444 and L187b, as well as several misapplied names. It needs mature grazing surfaces, clean water, and abundant oxygen; incidental algae in an ordinary aquarium are not a dependable diet.

Distribution & habitat

It occurs in piedmont streams of the upper Meta and Guaviare systems in eastern Colombia. Fast headwaters and small tributaries have bedrock, rocks, and boulders, with bankside vegetation and leaves but generally few true aquatic plants.

Clear, oxygenated water supports rich biofilm. Rain changes wild flow and turbidity, but stable aquarium conditions remain important.

Aquarium setup

Use at least a 120 × 30 cm footprint for long-term care. Sand, gravel, and rounded stones of several sizes create feeding and shelter surfaces. Aged wood is suitable; heavily staining new wood may reduce light penetration. Hardy attached plants can add cover.

Maintain clean, highly oxygenated water with substantial filtration and movement. Turnover around 10–15 aquarium volumes hourly is suggested, with 5–10 potentially workable when oxygenation is excellent. Never use an immature setup. Change approximately 30–50% weekly while preserving useful growth away from the viewing pane.

Diet & feeding

It grazes algae, small crustaceans, insect larvae, and other components of aufwuchs. Fresh algae should remain available alongside small live or frozen bloodworms, water fleas, and Artemia. Some fish learn to accept sinking foods, peas, cucumber, blanched zucchini, spinach, or fruit, but acceptance is less dependable than grazing.

A separate container can grow algae-covered stones for rotation. Emaciated imports need readily available suitable food without strong competition; inspect body condition before purchase.

Behaviour & compatibility

Dedicated accommodation works best, optionally with peaceful open-water companions that tolerate the flow. Territorial behavior toward relatives and similarly shaped catfishes is possible, so provide numerous retreats and broken sight lines.

Sexual dimorphism

Mature males grow larger and develop stronger pectoral odontodes. Their enlarged second unbranched anal ray bears two fleshy ridges, and the leading pectoral ray also develops a fleshy ridge. Male pelvic-fin edges are more angular, while females lack these pronounced structures.

Breeding

Captive reports are sparse and generally involve established maintenance aquariums. Eggs apparently attach to a cave roof and receive male protection, but detailed certainty is limited.

Notes

Shipments may contain the sympatric Chaetostoma dorsale. Historical names and codes are unreliable alone; sex-dependent anal and pelvic structures help with identification.
