Overview

The cryptic Butis butis is a nocturnal ambush predator that may rest against surfaces or swim upside down. It is territorial and unsociable toward its own kind. Small fishes and invertebrates are potential prey, so solitary maintenance is usually preferable.

Distribution & habitat

It occupies a broad Indo-Pacific coastal range, from eastern and southern Africa and nearby islands through South and Southeast Asia to Australia and Pacific islands. Brackish estuaries, lagoons, and mangroves are characteristic, with some movement into tidal freshwater.

It is predominantly bottom-associated around mud or sand, using plants and submerged wood, especially root tangles, for cover.

Aquarium setup

Provide a base around 75 × 30 cm for one fish and more space for any community. Brackish conditions are preferred long-term, without exceeding seawater salinity. Check the water used before purchase and initially maintain comparable conditions. Apparent tolerance at freshwater or marine extremes is not proof of equal long-term suitability.

Roots, branches, rocks, and pots create attachment surfaces and retreats under subdued light. Sand reduces accidental gravel ingestion during feeding. Many freshwater plants cannot tolerate the salinity, so suitable alternative cover or some leaf litter may be useful.

Diet & feeding

Its principal prey includes smaller fishes, worms, and crustaceans. Aquarium foods can include prawn, mussel or squid strips, and live or frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and mysids.

Avoid routine beef heart, chicken, and other terrestrial meats. Feeder fish are unnecessary and carry parasite, disease, and nutritional risks.

Behaviour & compatibility

Related or similarly shaped fishes may trigger territorial aggression. Small fishes and invertebrates will be eaten. Any companions must be sufficiently large, nonterritorial, and suited to brackish conditions; comparable length alone is not a guarantee.

Conspecifics are not social partners, and one specimen is the usual arrangement. Temporary crowding in a sales tank is not evidence that a permanent group will work.

Breeding

Aquarium reproduction remains unconfirmed. Marine larval development in some other sleeper fishes should not be assumed to establish a requirement for this species.

Notes

Enlarged outer teeth and scales between the eyes and on the cheek are useful identification clues. Brightness changes, surface alignment, and inverted posture form part of the group's ambush behavior and do not by themselves indicate illness.

Numerous trade names can obscure identity. Check the fish and its scientific name rather than relying on labels such as crocodile fish or upside-down sleeper.
