Overview
A rapid shoreline predator, Buccochromis nototaenia hunts other fishes and retreats toward deep water when threatened. Open swimming space and carefully sized companions are central to captive care.
Distribution & habitat
It is endemic to Lake Malawi, using sandy waters near shore where juvenile fishes gather. Hunting may involve driving prey into shallower water.
Aquarium setup
Use at least 120 by 45 by 45 cm, normally more for mixed-species keeping. Prioritize clear swimming routes over decoration. Rockwork can be added for companions when it leaves adequate space. Maintain effective filtration and waste control.
Diet & feeding
A quality cichlid pellet can form the captive staple despite its natural fish-based diet. Add varied animal foods and avoid overfeeding.
Behaviour & compatibility
Small fish are prey. Larger suitable Malawian companions and conspecifics may be tolerated in roomy quarters, while boisterous mbuna are poor choices.
Sexual dimorphism
Males become larger and more intensely colored.
Breeding
Maternal mouthbrooding is described, while successful hobby reproduction may remain unrecorded. Procedures from relatives should not be assumed to be proven for this species.
