Overview
The large, fast-swimming Buccochromis lepturus reaches around forty centimeters. Tolerance of substantial companions does not make it safe with small fishes, which remain prey.
Distribution & habitat
Endemic to Lake Malawi, adults use deeper water around the lake while juveniles can occur in shallow shoreline areas. Its open-water habits make collection difficult.
Aquarium setup
A 150 by 45 by 45 cm tank is the minimum indicated, with larger quarters for companions. Keep long swimming lanes clear because bursts of speed are characteristic. Rockwork is optional and should not displace open space. Filtration and maintenance must handle the adult load.
Diet & feeding
Although naturally piscivorous, it adapts to prepared food. Combine quality cichlid pellets with varied animal foods such as shrimp, mussels and earthworms, while controlling portions.
Behaviour & compatibility
Avoid small tankmates. Substantial compatible Malawian fishes may be considered in a sufficiently large enclosure, excluding boisterous mbuna. Conspecific tolerance is generally better when space is generous.
Sexual dimorphism
Adult males are larger and more colorful.
Breeding
It is a maternal mouthbrooder and hobby breeding has succeeded, although a detailed reproducible method is not established here.
